About Us
The Holy Eucharist is the centre of our life as Religious. In the Body and Blood of Christ that we receive daily we draw our strength. In the Eucharist we renew daily our fidelity to Christ and our commitment to serve our brothers and sisters.
As Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus we live in Community, as a religious family.
Daily we gather together and pray as a community the Liturgy of the Hours and the prayers prescribed by our Institute three times a day. We recite the Holy Rosary together, have Spiritual Meditation two times a day together. Spiritual reading and the examination of Conscience two times a day is also practiced. The visit to the Blessed Sacrament everyday at mid noon is also done together, if at all possible, otherwise each one has the responsibility to make sure she does it.
Apostolate
Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy is what we do. Bringing God to the people and the people to God is our mandate, in any way possible, in any culture and place where we are, and depending on the needs of the people of the time and place.
Our apostolic activities are created to cater the needs of the people such as: place for refugees in Italy, working with the untouchable in India, orphanages in the Philippines, prison ministry and working in the slums, childcare centres in the US and Canada, pastoral ministry, and so on, free clinic and education in Madagascar and many more.
Where are we
We are a Pontifical Order. Therefore, we can be doing our mission anywhere in the world.
Our Congregation was founded in the City of Ragusa, Sicily, Italy, where many Convents have been established. From there many more Communities of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart were founded in Italy, from the South to the North.
We are also present in several countries outside of Italy. In the order of its foundation: United States, Canada, Madagascar, Philippines, Nigeria, Romania, and India.
In Canada
Our mission in Canada originated in Welland, Ontario. Way back on August 22 of 1958, there was a mass immigration from Italy and surrounding countries of Europe.
The Sisters were called to minister to the newly Italian Immigrants, for moral and spiritual support using their own language.
Our communities in Canada, in Welland and here in Prince Edward Island, continue to bring communion and visit the sick in the hospitals and homes for the elderly, supporting families morally and spiritually, collaborating with the Bishop and Pastors in Pastoral works of the Diocese and the Parish, and providing care and education for young children in the childcare setting. Our Welland Community has begun a private Catholic School from kindergarten to Grade 8.
