Who Are We?
We are the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Ragusa, founded by Blessed Maria Schininà in Ragusa, Sicily, Italy on May 9,1889. As Italian in origin, we are originally known in Italy as Suore del Sacro Cuore di Gesu di Ragusa.
We are a Pontifical Religious Institute of Consecrated Women, embracing the three Evangelical Vows of Chastity, Poverty, and Obedience, according to the Cannon Law of the Catholic Church and the Constitutions of our Religious Family, our Institute [ Congregation]. We are a non-profit organization.
Our Spirituality is LOVE and REPARATION to the SACRED HEART of JESUS which is the basis of our Charism LOVE and SERVICE to the POOR.
It is important to note that POVERTY is very much present in the world in the past, today, and always. It presents itself in many different forms, so much more today in our sisters and brothers and in the world that we share and live in. While the world mostly pays attention to the material poverty, those who suffer from different kinds of poverty such as mental, moral, and spiritual poverty have been neglected and continue to be unnoticed. Hence, our Mother Foundress Maria Schinina, embraced all kinds of poverty and encouraged each one of us her Sisters, both during her lifetime and for always to do the same. It is clearly stated in the Constitutions and the Rule of the Institute, and is approved by the Holy See.
